ESL Classes ESL Classes All welcome, in-person only Wednesdays, 5:30 pm The ESL Conversation Club of Westlynn Baptist Church seeks to honour our Lord Jesus by being a blessing to newcomers, refugees, and immigrants; Offering a warm and welcoming environment where they can learn and practice English. Our aim is to help our students adjust more quickly to life in their new home and to prepare them for a great future by focusing on improving their English language skills. Our lessons are topical and do not require a curriculum, so a student can join in at any time of the year. Our lessons are taught fully in English which will require some knowledge of the English language to get the most out of the class. Most of our students are Novice-High to Intermediate-Low (ACTFL) level English language speakers. A typical lesson would be the following plan: Introduction: A brief introduction of the night's topic from the Bible. (5 minutes) Grammar/New Vocabulary: A presentation of the topic's grammar or new vocabulary. (20 minutes) Practice: The bulk of every lesson is practicing grammar and new vocabulary. This is done by a variety of methods such as discussion, small group activities, block stories, songs, debates, etc. (1 hour) Idioms: A fun way to close each lesson by discussing a couple of idioms related to the night's topic. (5 minutes) You can find out more about our ESL Conversation Club by texting by joining our Telegram Group , or by using the QR code below. What does it mean to be a woman? Can a biological male be a woman or a mother? A society that lacks a biblical worldview is confused and in conflict about these questions. Transgender activists are challenging widely-held cultural, moral and religious beliefs about biological sex and gender that humanity has held for millennia. There is cultural pressure to affirm that a woman is anyone who lives and identifies as female even though they may have had a different sex at birth. Many non-Christians, feminists, and even atheists see transgender ideology as lacking any scientific basis and as undermining the rights of biological women, e.g., to exclusive access to women-only spaces, to fair competition in women’s sports, or even to be recognized as distinct from biological men. Christians are called to respect God’s design for womanhood and manhood while showing love and respect to all persons, including those who erroneously advocate for transgender ideology. God's revelation of human nature in Scripture is counter-cultural but wise. In this sermon, Pastor Sam Chua examines the Bible's countercultural view of women and motherhood: What the Bible says about how women, together with men, jointly represent the image of God, how women have been gifted with the ministry of demonstrating God’s love through motherhood and child-bearing; and finally, how women are called to spiritual warfare through a godly lifestyle and service to family and others. God stands against all oppressors and will judge individuals and cultures that try to crush women. 0:00 - Can a man be a woman? Can a woman be a father? 3:02 - 3 things that God teaches us 4:23 - 1. God’s image in women 5:54 - Equality of man and woman corrupted by sin 7:40 - Doublethink, facts vs feelings 14:14 - Speak truth in love 15:20 - 2. God’s war for women 29:48 - Women straying after satan 31:19 - Christian women strike the devil 33:11 - Men should protect women who are physically weaker 37:27 - So, what is a woman? 38:29 - To biological males identifying as women 41:11 - To single women: disciple other people 46:16 - Closing prayer Please share your thoughts below in the COMMENTS. How is the current cultural confusion about the definition of womanhood and manhood hurting men and women? You are free to agree or disagree with us, but please be RESPECTFUL of others views. Disrespectful comments towards others may be removed. If you disagree, before posting your disagreement, please LISTEN to the ENTIRE sermon, because your objection may have already been anticipated and addressed. Pastor's take on the controversy (Proverbs 31:8-9) May 15, 2022 - Pastor Sam Chua at Westlynn Baptist Church. While the medical community defines abortion as removal of product of conception before term, Pastor Sam believes that abortion should not be used as a means to end the voiceless lives of unwanted sons and daughters. The Bible tells us that we are all fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of God, and that any kind of murder is immoral. So, is abortion wrong even when continuing the pregnancy endangers the mother's life? Is abortion wrong if the pregnancy is a result of rape? Is abortion wrong if the infant will be born with birth defects? What can we do to bridge both sides of the argument? #northvancouver #vancouver #westvancouver #northvan #yvr #burnaby #bc #canada #sermon #preach #abortion #controversial #babies #infants #birth Play Video Play Video 46:10 When the TRUTH is OFFENSIVE (Matthew 14:1-12) with #subtitles March 5, 2023 - It's DANGEROUS to speak the truth in our culture. George Orwell and Dr. Jordan B. Peterson have warned against the sickness of a culture that would forbid its citizens to speak the truth, or worse still, demands acquiescence to falsehood and lies. Bill C-4 may criminalize free speech and religious practice, as Christians, Muslims and civil liberties organizations have pointed out. Such legal threats suppress truthful and open discussion of key spiritual and moral questions related to gender, sexuality, LGBTQ issues, abortion, or euthanasia (now euphemistically renamed as "MAiD" or "medical assistance in dying"). While Bill C-4 purports to make "conversion therapy" illegal, many have pointed out that the law is deliberately vague and broad enough to be weaponized against politically incorrect opinions including the work of Christian leaders and counselors. Speaking the truth may be defined as a crime or as "hate speech," so that those who speak it -- are canceled. Still, God's servants have always spoken the truth, even when it cost them dearly. When the Prophet John (John the Baptist) spoke out boldly against King Herod's sexual sin, i.e., his adultery and incestuous relations, he got put in jail for his troubles and was later beheaded. For what? For speaking God's truth about sexual immorality. What does the Bible teach us about continuing to speak God's truth to our culture, even when it's dangerous? As we count the cost of speaking the truth, how can we be as courageous and bold as John the Baptist was? 0:00 Intro 0:32 Do we have free speech? 0:59 The truth threatens us 1:48 Voltaire's definition 2:20 Free speech is in doubt 2:32 Bill C-4 (conversion therapy) is dangerous 5:30 Jordan Peterson's critique of compelled speech 6:47 Who gets to define "hate speech"? 7:35 George Orwell's definition of liberty 7:48 Why the Bible is offensive to many 8:30 What if the law criminalizes Biblical truth? 13:21 The problem of a guilty conscience 17:40 The godly confront their culture's sins 18:36 Our culture has redefined sin 19:05 Why Canadians say "sorry" so much 21:07 The Canadian Gospel: peace at the expense of truth 25:25 The unvarnished truth still pulls on the human heart 31:25 Are you a slave to your passions? - Biblical Counselling | Westlynn Baptist Church
Biblical Counselling I need to talk to someone What is Biblical Counselling ? Biblical counselling is the soul care ministry of God’s people under the oversight of God’s church, dependent upon the authority and sufficiency of God’s Word through the work of the Holy Spirit. Biblical counselling seeks to reorient disordered desires, affections, thoughts, behaviours, and worship toward a God-designed image of man with the purpose to restore people to a right fellowship with God and others. Biblical counselling is fundamentally a theological task. The work of understanding the problems which require counselling and of helping people with those problems requires theological faithfulness and submission to the way God explains life. The aim of Biblical Counseling is not only to deal with a sinful habit, a difficult relationship, or a chronic illness or a loss. Its final and long-term aim is Christlikeness, a life lived in purity and holiness of heart and mind, in action, speech, attitudes and thoughts. Biblical counseling ministers to the inner man (our heart, mind, or soul) where transformation by God’s Word through the Holy Spirit starts, and it results in biblical change in the outer man (our bodies, behaviour, and speech) living to love, worship and serve God. Why Biblical Counselling ? We believe that God’s Word, the Bible, is sufficient to resolve life’s most challenging situations and questions. Though followers of Christ are made right with God by Christ alone, through faith alone, not through good works, they continue to live in a corrupt world and in weak and totally deprived bodies. By ministering God’s truth, Biblical counseling partners with the believer in pursuing a biblical way of thinking and living every day, to please God and to become more like Christ (progressive sanctification). Faith leads to works, to a disciplined life and commitment to live to serve and please our Maker and Redeemer, which is our God given goal on earth. When Do I Know I Need Biblical Counselling ? When you struggle with unbiblical ingrained habits (of thinking, speech, or behaviour), a difficult relationship, grief, chronic illness, anxiety, anger, depression, temptations you cannot overcome, or any other life circumstance where you need to know God’s will, work, and perspective. How and W here Can I Get Biblical Counselling ? You can contact us via the link below by completing the Personal Data Inventory (PDI) form and emailing it back to us. We shall respond within a week. Children's Ministry Children's Ministry Ages 6-11 - Sundays during sermon Ages 0-5 - Sundays at service start We follow a curriculum that gives the children an overview of the entire Bible in 3 years. The aim is to help them learn about and obey God’s Word in an age-appropriate manner. We meet in the basement of the church, every Sunday during the sermon time, except on the first Sunday of each month when everyone is encouraged to be in service to worship and observe communion together. At Children's Ministry, we teach the Bible using material that the Elders have approved. We currently use the Generations of Grace Curriculum . The Bible passage is read and then explained in historical context as well as in redemptive history. There are activities, games and illustrations to help kids remember the main points. These are all specially developed not only to be fun and educational but also biblically correct. We understand that even with the drawings that the kids colour, care has be taken by the curriculum developers to ensure biblical and historical accuracy. While accurate knowledge is an important aspect of understanding the Bible, application and obedience is also emphasized as our teachers discuss and help children work through these issues with real life examples and through prayer for needs. We are clear that discipling children is the responsibility of their parents. Hence we also work with the family by providing downloadable guides for Family Devotions based on what the child has learned on Sunday. Many of us are parents ourselves and have done these devotions with our families and have found them to be beneficial both to the parents and the child(ren) as they cater to various age groups that may exist in your family. We also collaborate with families to help them prepare their children for the two important projects that we do – the Christmas Eve Nativity Service and Easter Scripture reading. It is our prayer that the Holy Spirit would use all these and other experiences in the lives of our children to develop godly men and women of Westlynn. For volunteer sign up : It is with a correct understanding of the Word and also a living faith with our Creator that we can not only share the Word with the children but also model it through our own lives and experiences. The goal is not the mere imparting of knowledge but its application in our lives and that of the children and ultimately the bearing of the fruit of the Spirit and Christ-likeness in our lives. Our teachers and helpers are committed Christians who each have a living faith in our Lord Jesus and who want to grow in their faith by serving the Lord. Preparing the lesson involves first doing an in depth study of the passage. The curriculum that we follow provides an excellent study guide as well as 10 minute teaching videos to help us first understand the passage and its context in redemptive history as well as comprehend how it is ultimately fulfilled by or in Christ. In addition the helpful analogies and illustrations are also shared. Many of our teachers through preparing for the lessons actually learn more about the Bible and our amazing God. Teachers commit to serve a one to two year term teaching approximately once a month from Sep-Jun first as a Helper and then as a Teacher who not only teaches the children but also helps to mentor the Helper. Our Planning Center Registration module allows the teachers to view the class list of names to allow them to remember the children’s names but also to pray for and care for each of them. If you have a passion for Lord and have a desire to understand and clearly explain the Word of God simply to anyone but in particular to children, are willing to undergo training, a criminal record check and an interview, we would like to work with you to help develop your skills and passions to serve the Lord better. Please speak to Joeun K. or Daniel Z. when you visit us on Sunday.

Prayer Ministry Prayer Ministry All welcome, in person or online Wednesdays, 7:00 pm At Westlynn Baptist Church, we strongly believe in the power of prayer and that too often we have not because we ask not (James 4:2). Our Lord Jesus Christ was a man of prayer, often going to desolate places early in the morning to pray (Mark 1:35) and spending entire nights in prayer as he communed with his Father (Luke 6:12, Matt 26:36-46). Our church has a number of prayer gatherings throughout the week. On Sunday mornings, we gather for a time of pre-service prayer at 9:15am in the prayer downstairs. During this meeting, we pray for the Lord’s strengthening and ask for his blessing over our service and to allow us to minister to those who come to worship. During our Sunday services, we have a time of responsive prayer. Following the sermon, we invite people to come to the front or to the back where someone from the prayer team will be available to pray for requests or needs that have come up while the congregation continues singing. On Wednesday evenings, our church family gathers for midweek prayer at 7pm in the main sanctuary. During this time, we open with a time of praise and adoration, glorifying God for who He is and then praying for the salvation of lost souls and also various needs in our congregation and beyond. This time in corporate prayer is precious as it not only unites our hearts together before the Lord, but we also have the blessing of seeing God powerfully answer our prayers and requests.

Food Program Food Program Registration Closed Food Program Discontinued The Food Program at Westlynn had its last service on December 26, 2024. Unfortunately, the program is now discontinued. If you need any assistance, please contact Immigrant Link Center Society directly. Westlynn Food Program exists to be the hands and feet of Jesus. It is for those in our community who can benefit from bi-weekly food donations. Westlynn Food Program is a food distribution site operating under the umbrella of Immigrant Link Center Society . The Immigrant Link Center Society was established in 2016 and started the "Win-Win Project" that distributes perishable surplus foods that are still viable from partnering grocery stores (that would otherwise have been thrown out, adding to landfill waste) free of charge. Food donations include vegetables, fruits, meats, dairy, deli products, breads, and bakery goods which are then sorted into boxes by volunteers according to family size and requests. This program is for those that receive government/income assistance, RAP benefits, fall within below the low income cut-off (LICO) guidelines, or have other extenuating circumstances. Clients must register to be part of the program. The program has a maximum capacity of 50 clients at any given time. Volunteers serve at the church every other Thursday from 10:30 am to 2:00 pm. Their responsibilities include unloading boxes of food from a delivery truck, sorting food into individual boxes for each family that receives food, distributing boxes to the clients, tearing down boxes for recycling, and cleaning up the space at the end of the day.
